Philosophy of Economics: Exploration, Positioning, and Consolidation of a Philosophical Discipline

Professor Dr. Susanne Hahn, along with Professor Dr. Ludger Heidbrink (Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel), Professor Dr. Peter Seele (University of Italian Switzerland, Lugano), and Professor Dr. em. Birger Priddat (University of Witten/Herdecke), will be organizing a Scoping Workshop funded by the VW Foundation from July 19 to 21, 2023.

The workshop's objective is to identify the reasons behind the continued niche existence of the philosophy of economics in Germany. Additionally, it aims to explore the relationship between the philosophy of economics and business and corporate ethics, as well as other philosophical sub-disciplines. The goal is to highlight the potential of the philosophy of economics in both academic contexts and in terms of public reflection on economics and economic theories.

Themes of the workshop include:

  1. The current situation of the philosophy of economics in Germany.
  2. Analysis of strengths and weaknesses, exploring the potentials of the philosophy of economics.
  3. Examining the relationship between the philosophy of economics and economic ethics, as well as business ethics.
  4. Exploring potential future collaborations of the philosophy of economics at the intersection of various disciplines.
  5. Assessing the practical relevance and purpose of philosophy of economics.
  6. Examining the presence of philosophy of economics in universities and the public sphere, and identifying pathways to establishment.
